* NOTE

  • Several people have asked me why I classified 108 as an "intermediate" TOEFL score.
  • By most standards, 108 might be considered an "advanced" TOEFL score, especially in Japan.
  • However, 108 is not "high" for Kellogg. In fact, it is below average.

Since 2007, I have helped 13 Japan-based clients get admitted to Kellogg. (This does not count the dozens I met only for interview training.)

  • Their average GMAT was 705
    • GMAT range 640 - 750
    • Average GMAT verbal = 36

  • Their average TOEFL was 109
    • TOEFL range 104 - 117
    • Average TOEFL speaking = 27

  • 5 had a TOEFL score below 109
    1. TOEFL  = 104; GMAT = 670
    2. TOEFL  = 104; GMAT = 740
    3. TOEFL  = 105; GMAT =710
    4. TOEFL  = 106; GMAT =720
    5. TOEFL  = 106; GMAT = 750

Therefore, it seems easier to be admitted to Kellogg with a high TOEFL and a low GMAT than the other way around (high GMAT, low TOEFL).

Why?

  • Like HBS, Kellogg emphasizes discussion-based learning
  • While HBS emphasizes the case method and 'cold calls' from professors, Kellogg discussions happen in study groups and team projects.
  • Kellogg wants to confirm that applicants will actively contribute to class discussions.
  • Hence, the emphasis on TOEFL.
